Pahari Paintings

Credit for recognizing the existence of Rajput paintings being distinct from Mughal paintings goes to A.K. Coomaraswamy. He categorized them into Pahari and Rajsthani. Pahari Rajput paintings were from the Punjab hillstates like Guler, Chamba, Kangra, and Basohli. RAjasthani paintings were from the princely states in Rajhisthan. He published Rajput paintings in two volumes in 1916 at Oxford.

W.G. Archer's work published in London in 1952 as Kangra Paintings and India Paintings in the Punjab hills brought them into the limelight as a distinct Pahari Rajput painting school.

Subsequently, Dr. M.S. Randhawa, Goetz and Khandalavala did in-depth work to trace history and catalog these works in their publications.
