Church of Scotland Mission Chamba

The Chamba Mission was founded in 1863 by Rev. William Ferguson, a minister of the Church of Scotland as an independent mission. In 1973, the mission was taken over by the Church of Scotland and Dr. J. Hutchinson was appointed its head.
The mission did preaching, education, and medical missionary work. Raja Sri Singh of Chamba donated land for the mission. Raja Sham Singh built a beautiful church for the mission at his own expense. In 1907 there were 100 Christians in Chamba.
In 1864 Lower Primary School was opened for boys and girls by the mission. Middle School for boys opened in 1876. A primary boys school was maintained by the mission at Dalhousie in the summers. Total attendance at the 3 schools was 147 in 1907. 2 lower primary schools were run by the female missionaries for girls in Chamba. One was foooor Hindu girls and the other was for Muslim girls. In 1907, they had an attendance of 65.
The mission also opned a dispensary in Chamba in 1894. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John have been translated into the Chambiali Dialect and printed in the Takari script at Ludhiana in 1881. This was the first book printed in Takari script.
Dr. J. Hutchinson served the mission more than 30 years. His contributions to document history and culture etc. of the Chamba State in the Gazeeter of the Chamba State in 1904.
